Many tools give predetermine end result. For example when use clipping mask you know what should be the end result. There are many type of Blending Mode but those seem do not give a predetermine end result, it seems only a trial & error can decide which is most appropriate one. Is this way Blending Mode works?

Excellent link, but to condense it down: A blend mode is not a "thing", it's a relationship. The outcome depends not on either of the two layers, but on the relationship between them.
