Brush malfuntions

I am having issues with my brush tool. Whenever I apply a brush stroke to my subject a white block appears that covers the area I am working on. If I select a diffirent tool the block ussually goes away, but returns when I drag with my brush tool again. The same issue applies to my eraser tool. Does anyone have any advice?
