Brush Settings Question

Hello all

I hope someone can help - I'm sure the answer is simple, but I just don't know it!

When I change the settings of a brush to suit the work I'm doing, if I change to a different tool (say for example move tool or any other) when I go back to that brush, it has returned to it's default settings and I have to go through the whole setting up process again. I can only get it to stay at my settings if I save it as a new brush or hit the padlocks. Surely this is not right. It seems crazy. It really interferes with workflow.

Is there some setting I'm missing that will enable the amended brush settings to be retained until I change them, without necessarily using the padlocks? Because that then changes all the other brushes to those settings.

Sometimes I am using several brushes and want to swap between them but every time I go back to any of the brushes I've adjusted to suit me, they've just returned to their original settings. If I use the padlock on one of them it changes all the brushes to reflect those settings.

What am I missing? I'm going a little nuts here.

problem is not to do with Wacom tablet, you are wrong.

problem is that when you re-select brush tool, you are doing so by again clicking on your saved brush in the presets panel, which resets all brush settings back to the saved settings of that particular preset.

if you want to return to brush tool without losing those brush settings you must either use keyboard shortcut to go back to brush tool or click the brush icon in the tools panel.

Wow - this is so simple, I can't believe I didn't realize this!

Thank you so much everyone for your input.

So, I'm assuming then that if I get a few brushes working the way I like and I want to flip between them, that I should save them as new brushes so I can work effectively and have them available exactly like that every time I go back to the painting.

This is some learning curve!

At least I know I'm not going nuts, its just how the brushes work.

Thank you so much everyone.

As I mentioned earlier selecting a Brush in the Brushes Panel and then changing settings in the Brush Settings Panel does not change the originally selected Brush.

And if you think about it you may recognise how troublesome that would be, especially is someone else should ever work on your computer.

first step: you select the brush tool from the brush presets panel (so essentially you are selecting a saved brush preset, correct?)

next, you make some a few changes to the brush tool.

next, you select, for example, the eraser tool.

next, you go back to the brush tool.

here the question is: *HOW* are you going back to the brush tool? Are you pressing a keyboard shortcut to re-select the brush tool, or are you clicking the brush tool/icon in the tools panel, or are you re-selecting the brush tool by clicking on same brush preset (like in first step) in brush/tool presets panel?

Switching from the Brush Tool to the Move Tool and back to the Brush Tool should not change the Brush Tool’s settings.

Does it for you?

If so some general trouble-shooting may be called for.

Sometimes I am using several brushes and want to swap between them but every time I go back to any of the brushes I've adjusted to suit me, they've just returned to their original settings.

You might be misunderstanding something.

When you change some setting (in the Brush Settings Panel for example) you are not changing the Brush (as represented in the Brushes Panel); that’s just not how Photoshop Brushes work.

But the »Recent Brushes« at the top of the Brushes Panel may still hold some of the settings you want to re-use.

Thank you, yes, that is exactly what is happening.

I choose a brush, change some settings, go off and use other tools and when I come back to the brush it has returned to its original settings.

The recent brushes do retail the settings, but sometimes I've used several brushes (trying to find the right one for the job) and by the time i want to go back to my adjusted brush it is no longer recent.

I choose a brush, change some settings, go off and use other tools and when I come back to the brush it has returned to its original settings.

Please describe the exact procedure, best with screenshots including the pertinent panels and toolbox to illustrate.

And once again: When you select a Brush in the Brushes Panel, then change settings in the Brush Settings Panel you are not changing that Brush.
