Question

Brush tool always subtracts from Mask, whether painted color is Black or White -- what's wrong?

When I use the Brush Tool to add to a Layer Mask by painting black, it subtracts from the masked area instead of adding to it; when I change to brush color to White, that too subtracts from the mask -- so whichever color I use, foreground or background, the result is a subtraction from the mask?  What am I doing wrong?  How can I add to the mask?

Are you sure, that you have the brush tool selected and not the Eraser tool?

There is no brush blend mode that would cause white and black to both subtract from the mask.

What is the Brush Tool’s Blend Mode? (The screenshot @Ged_Traynor requested should show that anyway.)

@fr._menas_anthony_5646 can you post a screenshot of the Photoshop interface with all the pertinent panels opened to highlight the issue
