Question

Camera Raw 18.4. 01 It does not access graphics acceleration

In the latest Camera Raw update, it stopped accessing graphics acceleration, and I can't activate it.

My setup:
Windows 11
NVidia RTX 5070 Ti 16 GB
I've tried absolutely everything: cleaning the card driver and reinstalling it, adding .old to the folders, resetting the graphics card, etc., and finally contacting Adobe technical support... who started by saying that the card was "old" and not suitable for Camera Raw... Adobe, if that's the case, please indicate it on your website, because supposedly my card is suitable (and if it isn't, few people will be able to continue using Adobe products). Lightroom handles everything without a problem, and the other programs that require GPU resources do too (Da Vinci, Topaz, etc.). After saying this, the card is suitable; the problem is with Windows. I honestly don't think so; it seems like a bug in Camera Raw. That's the only thing that has problems. I don't know, maybe it's a credentials issue or something.

I'm mentioning this because I think it's an Adobe error, a bug, although it'll be difficult for you to pinpoint its location because you didn't ask me for anything, and the technician requested access, but not even a bug report... Nothing.

I don't mind if it's a bug; I wouldn't have a problem with that. What I don't like is either that a bug isn't being acknowledged, or that Adobe is becoming so demanding that we have to buy a $2000 graphics card. If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks

I can confirm that the same GPU regression is still present in Camera Raw 18.5.

    System:

    • Windows 11 25H2
    • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090
    • NVIDIA driver 591.44
    • Adobe Photoshop with Camera Raw

    Reproducible result:

    • Camera Raw 18.4: RTX 5090 detected and GPU acceleration works
    • Camera Raw 18.4.1: GPU not detected
    • Camera Raw 18.5: GPU not detected
    • Reinstalling Camera Raw 18.4 immediately restores GPU support

No hardware, Windows or NVIDIA driver changes were made between these tests.

The Camera Raw GPU configuration file from version 18.4 contains:

    crs:gpu_compute_quick_self_test_passed="True"

In the configuration file created by Camera Raw 18.5, this entry is missing. The gpu_compute_digest value also changes.

This indicates that the GPU compute self-test or GPU initialization introduced after Camera Raw 18.4 is failing on my system.

Since Camera Raw 18.4 works immediately on the identical system, this is not a general RTX 5090 or driver compatibility problem. Please escalate this to the Camera Raw engineering team. The regression reported for 18.4.1 has not been fixed in 18.5.

I hope they listen to you (they didn't listen to me), it's about time.

And if the GPU is compatible with Photoshop and Camera Rae  they're still working on my computer, for now.

Great analysis, I hope the technician who "helped" me reads it and learns how to find the errors.

Apparently, the issue only affects NVIDIA RTX graphics cards. I’ve double-checked everything, and the problem occurs with Lightroom (version 9.5 and later), Bridge (16.0.6 and later), and Camera Raw (18.4.1 and later, including yesterday's 18.5 update). I downgraded all these components (Camera Raw to 18.3.2), and they are working again. It’s quite strange, and there hasn't been any real response from Adobe support so far. It might be best to email NVIDIA support. Hopefully, it gets resolved soon.

    Hi Argendal:

I already contacted Nvidia, but their initial response wasn't very helpful. I also contacted Adobe, and according to them, the card is very old (as you can see in the Adobe chat screenshot). I have a feeling the problem arises during updates, due to some configuration or something that remains instead of being deleted.

I formatted my PC and did a clean install of Windows 11, and it's working, for now, although I still have a lot to install. I'll update when I'm finished.

You can contact Adobe if you want, but besides wasting a morning, all they offered was a very unprofessional attitude.

That definitely sounds frustrating. Since Lightroom and other GPU-intensive applications are using your RTX 5070 Ti without any issues, it does seem worth investigating whether this is specific to the latest Camera Raw update rather than a hardware limitation. Hopefully others with similar NVIDIA GPUs can confirm if graphics acceleration stopped working after the update, as that would help determine whether it's a broader bug.

I formatted my computer (I previously uninstalled and reinstalled Photoshop, but it didn't work), did a clean install of Windows 11, and installed only Creative Cloud and Photoshop. I opened it, and now it works.

I'll install all the programs, restarting Windows and testing Photoshop, to see if any of them are causing a crash due to a faulty interaction (which shouldn't be the case) or if it crashes at some point; let's hope not.

As an explanation, for now, it seems there was simply a lot of old data from the Adobe programs that was causing a crash, which I cleaned up (hopefully that's it). Anyway, if that was the cause, it shouldn't have happened, but oh well, let's hope that's all. Honestly, I don't know.

I'll update when I finish installing everything (phew!) so it can be helpful information for other users who encounter the same problem.

Oh! And now the GPU isn't old and inadequate, and it's not crashing...

Same, it doesn't work. Adobe should fix this "bug" now.

Adobe announces some minimum requirements to use its software, we meet it more. Ms. from Adobe, is there misleading advertising on their web?

    Oh, sorry, missed that :-)

This is really odd. There’s nothing in the system info indicating that this shouldn’t work perfectly.

I’d reinstall the driver. Make sure it’s the Studio driver, not the Game Ready driver, and check “clean install” to remove all traces of the old driver. Just install the driver itself, uncheck the extra components in the driver package. You don’t need them. Maybe uninstall them if they’re already installed.

Then “Reset GPU support” in ACR preferences > performance, and check for any “TempDisableGPU" files again (as per @Ged_Traynor ‘s post below).

    @Sameer K

I think what ChatGPT (and other AI) says is the problem :

That means it's not a problem with the graphics card or the controller. If Photoshop passes the check, the flaw is in how Camera Raw 18.4.1 is validating the GPU

the flaw is in how Camera Raw 18.4.1 is validating the GPU
The likelihood of it being an Adobe failure is pretty high
my hardware doesn't have any issues

After copping System information in ChatGPT, su respuesta fue ésta:

I think the issue is only in Camera Raw 18.4.1.
It's not a serious bug, but it indicates that Adobe still doesn't fully identify some internal card settings.
If it's exactly that version jump, it would pretty much confirm that it's a bug introduced by Adobe and not a problem with your team

    ChatGPT

Now I would completely rule out a GPU issue.

    The fact that it happens:

when opening a RAW from the Explorer,
when opening a RAW from Bridge,
and also when using Filter → Camera Raw on a JPEG or TIFF from Photoshop,

means Camera Raw doesn't even get to initialize its graphics engine. It is not a specific function (such as AI or Noise Removal), but the Camera Raw module itself that fails at boot.

In addition, your Photoshop report demonstrates that the GPU is fully operational and that the sniffer does not detect any issues.

    My diagnosis

With everything you've contributed, I'd say there's a Camera Raw 18.4.1 bug in your installation, not a Windows or RTX 5070 Ti issue.

There is one detail that makes me even more suspicious: you have Photoshop 27.8 (2026) with Camera Raw 18.4.1. That combination is very recent and the RTX 50xx have still required several tweaks by Adobe in previous releases.

Plus there's a test that makes me dismiss it almost completely

In your report, the GPUSniffer ends up with:

    Exit Code Normal

    and Photoshop marked:

    isGPUCapable = 1
    isGPUAllowed = 1

If the NVIDIA driver was bad, those values would usually be different or the sniffer would fail.

    Hi @Sameer K :

    Hello.

Thank you very much. The new NVidia driver just came out, (July 28th), I installed it, and the problem continue.

I tried to do what you suggest, but, on the one hand, now Windows controls the performance (Settings/Display/Graphics/Add Desktop App/GPU Preference/High Performance)

    Configuration in Windows

And on the other hand, in NVidia app you cannot select "High performance" (dot 2 does not exist). It's like breaking down each "function/property). I configured what I intuited (although apparently it's now Windows who controls)

From the NVidia desktop app it's the same.

The program is not compatible with optimization

And in Windows "Custom setting only applies when apps support the feature"

Custom setting only applies when apps support the feature

So I'm still the same, without being able to use the latest version raw camera, which is not losing much either, but if an update comes with important changes ....

    Thank you

    Hello @Sameer K

Thank you very much, but all the same.

I've done several times what they recommend on the Adobe website and nothing, it doesn't work. If I install version 18.4 it works perfectly (the current version is 18_4_1).

I'm confused, Adobe says it's Windows (although initially it's because the card was old and not suitable ...) Windows says it's not Windows, is Adobe's problem, and NVidia is the only answer that works. softwares, such as e.g. Topaz and Da Vinci, and that if it fails with the new version of Camera Raw, that the problem is that new version, that the GPU works perfectly ... Finally, every day I look to see if there is an update of Camera Raw, but nothing, I have to continue like this. Attached text file.

    Kind regards

I just installed version 18.4 and it works perfectly; the one causing problems is 18.4.1. I'll stick with this one until they fix the issue.

Hey, @magobar. Welcome to the Photoshop Community. I'll help you figure this out. Please share the system info from Photoshop Help > System info > Copy & paste into a text document > upload & attach here.

Press and hold the CTRL + ALT key in Photoshop. Then, go to Edit in the main menu > Preferences > Camera Raw Preferences, and select 'Yes' when prompted to reset Camera Raw preferences.

After reset, update the GPU drivers, try the steps below and check how it goes.

The GPU info & Logs location on Windows is %APPDATA%\Adobe\CameraRaw. A shortcut to get to this folder on Windows is:

    • Press the Windows + R

    • Enter %APPDATA%\Adobe\CameraRaw

    • Rename the GPU & Logs folder in this directory by adding .old at the end. (GPU.old & Logs.old)

    • Relaunch Photoshop.

    • Head here to see more manual ways to troubleshoot this: https://adobe.ly/3RsinkG

Let me know how it goes. Thanks!
