Question

Can't replicate Adobe tutorial: Adjustment layer applied to layer mask

In Photoshop 2026 there's a tutorial in the program called "Using layer masks". In it, the presenter explains how to create a layer mask on a green cup so that clouds from the image on the layer below becomes visible in the cup. Bottom layer is the clouds and above it is the layer with the teacup with the layer mask. There's a little chain icon between these two. So far so good.

The tutorial then says you can even use adjustment layers on the layer mask. The presenter has the layer mask selected in the layers panel, clicks on Adjustments and selects Hue/Saturation. When she drags the saturation slider in Properties, the color of the clouds gets more intense, but the layer with the teacup is not affected. When I do this, both the teacup layer and the cloud layer are affected. What am I doing wrong? I know I can move the adjustment layer down so it sits above the layer I want adjusted, but that's not what the tutorial showed. The screenshot is from my layers panel after having applied the adjustment layer.

Hey, @Ruben3240965190tx. Welcome to the Photoshop Community. I'll help you figure this out.

Could you share the link to the in-app tutorial where you have this demo?

The way you've set up the layers, you can use a Clipping mask to click the adjustment layer to the Layer beneath it. Go to Layer> Create clipping mask (ALT/OPT + CTRL/CMD + G) to do so. However, adjustments will be applied to the Match Cup layer.

You could drag/move down the Hue/Sat. Adjustment layer under the Match Cup layer to make it affect the Clouds layer.

I hope this helps. Thanks!

Hello @Sameer K, thank you for the response.

I can't link to the tutorial because it's within Photoshop, but I found it under the "Skills" panel, then "Must know" and then "Using layer masks". I assume the video simply didn't explain/show that she moved the adjustment layer, which was a bit confusing. Thanks for the help though, I appreciate it.

Best regards,

Ruben

I just found it. Thanks for the steps, and yes, it does not clarify how to use the Hue/Sat. adjustment layers. Happy learning!

Thanks!
