Can't use fill in v27 Pshop 2026 - Only way to fill an object is tou use the paint bucket

This was working fine and then for no reason just stopped working.

YES - I had the correct layer selected.

NO - the layer was not locked.

It was set to the correct "normal" mode and the fill opacity was correct set to 100.

NO - it wasn;t any "Commands" actions.

YES - my keyboard shortcut was correct for Shift+F5

It just stopped working.

The only layer I could fill was the LOCKED background layer - which should NOT allow me to edit at all.

OR - I had to use the paint bucket tool to perform the fill.

I had to uninstall that version and go back to 26.11.1 - where by golly - the shift+F5 shortcut and the fill option from the edit menu both work.

This seems like a bug within the new release to me.

Please fix it for all of us.

Gotta say, I have no time for this kind of unreliability and instability every time I finally relent and decide to do an update.

Photoshop, like Illustrator and Indesign are programs I use for WORK. I have deadlines. If i don;t meet them - I dont get paid.  I can't beta test your program updates for you.

At this point on a nearly nightly basis bugs and glitches are eating into my productivity.

To the point where I want a partial refund for all the stress and time it is costing me.

I suppose you are right. I can just set them up again. It's mostly my workspaces I don't want. O lose but yes I can reset them. Certainly worth it - if it gets rid of the bugs I'm experiencing. Thanks again.

This is why I never migrate preferences to a new version. Spending ten minutes to set it up fresh is time well spent, and an opportunity to blow out the old cobwebs.

But yes, save out everything you need first (actions, brushes etc). Unfortunately you can't save out keyboard shortcuts directly, but I think it's possible to just copy the .kys file and put it back in, or a workspace file with shortcuts included. But I'm OCD enough to set all that up fresh too 😉

I was trying to avoid having to do that but I can try that later and see if it works. Will just have to export my settings first.

I appreciate the answer.   😊

Works as expected here.

This sounds like corrupt preferences, which can cause unpredictable behavior that often looks like application bugs.

Preferences are prone to corruption because they are rewritten on every application exit. An irregular shutdown can corrupt them, and errors accumulate. Migrating preferences to a new version with new code can bring out latent errors.
