Cannot activate Color Mechanic Plug-in in PS 2026

Color Mechanic (plug in filename is ColorMechanic2-64.8bf) is a plugin that's not been supported for several years. However, I have receently installed it on another Windows 11 machine running Photoshop 2025 and it works fine. However, when I first try to use it (Filters>Digital Light & Color>Color Mechanic), it prompts me to enter the activation key. Before I can do that, the activation window disappears and Photoshop locks up. Is there a reason this plugin won't work in PS 2026? I had no trouble activating it on machines running earlier versions of Photoshop.

See this page from Digital Light and Color that says Color Mechanic has been discontinued. It includes a link.

Color Mechanic is a selective color correction plug-in for Adobe Photoshop or Photoshop Elements running on Windows PCs. What makes Color Mechanic so powerful is that it lets you change one or more colors in an image without changing any other colors in the image and without the painstaking work of selecting the parts of the image you want to change. This type of selective color correction is both easier to use and more powerful than conventional color balancing or filtration techniques that simply apply a uniform correction to the entire image or give you a few sliders to adjust.

Hi Jane-e, Thank you for your response to my question. It was discontinued many years ago. However, with each new PC I have acquired, I have been able to simply copy the Color Mechanic plug-in file into the proper Photoshop plug-in folder, activate the plug-in with the serial number that had been provided when I initially acquired the product, and continue to use the Color Mechanic plug-in with the newer PC’s and newer versions of PS. That’s always worked from PC to PC and PS versions from pre-2020 up through PS 2025. It just won’t allow me to enter the serial number for PS 2026. Nothing has changed in the plug-in file. It’s just a change between PS 2025 and PS 2026.

As you have suggested, however, I will follow up with the Digital Light & Color folks to see if they can shed some light on this. Thanks again!

It has always been the plugin makers’ responsibility to update their plugins for new host application versions, not the other way round. You’ve just been lucky the plugin has worked up until now.

Lots of people have older PS versions installed just to run plugins that are no longer supported.
