Question

Cannot multi select in document

I must have changed a setting somewhere, but now I cannot select more than one layer in the document by Ctrl-clicking. Only the first clicked layer shows the transform tools.

Auto-select is enable for Layers

I've noticed that when I ctrl-click the layer and move my curser off the layer, that  a whole lot of measurements appear. Perhaps this is a clue?

Please advise

"the first clicked layer shows the transform tools"

Can you tell us what you are trying to do after you get the layers selected? That will help us to better answer your question.

Some thoughts:

  • If the transform controls are showing and you are not trying to transform, then uncheck "Show Transform Controls" in the options bar
  • Shift+Click will select contiguous layers. For example, if you have 5 layers and click layer 2, press Shift, click layer 5, you select layers 2:5.
  • Ctrl+Click will select non-contiguous layers. For example, if you have 5 layers and click layer 2, press Ctrl, click layer 5, you select layers 2 and 5.

Yes I know this. It's only a week or so since I finished a big poster. I'm absolutely sure that by clicking several layeers, by either of the methods, that each layer displayed it's own transform handles.

In the image above, there are 4 layers within the transform box. Only 2 layers are selected however.

But how do I know which ones I've selected? Other than looking at the layer list and hoping I remeber the layer names!

Surely it was not like this???

Hi Stephen,

Can you show another screen shot, this time including your Layers panel and options bar?

But how do I know which ones I've selected?

  • Selected layers will be highlighted. You can also filter to display only selected layers.

Other than looking at the layer list and hoping I remeber the layer names!

  • Yes, you should be naming them something that makes sense to you and that you will recognize. What names are you using now?

You can select multiple layers by:

In the layers panel, click the first and Ctrl click the second

With autoselect and the move tool selected :

In the document window, click the first, Shift click the second

Have the transform tools changed? I'm very sure I was able to ctrl-click to select two layers. Each layer then showed it own handles.

If I shft-click, both layers are bounded by a single box with handles

You can temporary switch to Move tool when using most of the tools by holding Ctrl key.

Don’t you mean ctrl-shift-click?

Please post screenshots including the pertinent Panels (Layers, …).

In the image below, I used shft-click to select two layers which are bounded by a single box. Is this new behaviour?

Each photo is a layer. I selected the bottom two

Where are the pertinent Panels in your screenshot?

And no, that is not new behaviour for the Move Tool with »Show Transform Controls« selected.
