Cannot open PSD file

I can't open a PSD file in Adobe Photoshop. When I do, I get an error message like "Could not complete your request because it is not a valid Photoshop document", or Photoshop freezes or crashes. What could be the cause and is there any way I can fix or recover the file?

Maybe the file is corrupted? Have you tried importing it into InDesign or Premiere or After Effects? They can import PSD files.

Does this only affect the one file? Or are all files affected?

The reason for this can be manifold. For example a defective hardware (disk failure) or a program crash as the file was saved.

If you've a beackup you can restore the file from this. If you have work with the file in the menatime this editings are missing. Otherwise I don't see a chance to recover the file.
