Changing texture for 3D Mesh shows odd wireframe.

I imported a 3D model made in Rhino 5 to Photoshop. I select a mesh and I want to apply a 2D image to that surface. When I select the mesh and go to materials -> Diffuse -> New Texture. It opens a new document with a bunch of wireframes.

My Question

How do I add a 2D image to an imported 3D object?

That "new document" is a flat texture map and the "wireframes" are the UV map i.e. they show how the model surface is spread out onto the flat texture surface. So you add your 2D image as a new layer in that flattened psb file, rotating and positioning it over the UV map, then save the psb and the 3D view will be updated.

Note : You have control of the tiling by clicking on Edit UV Properties (underneath edit - texture). Unfortunately, in Photoshop,  you cannot control how the UV is unwrapped. For that you would need to go to a 3D application.
