Checkered layer showing

I am using Photoshop for the first time. I am trying to draw some art and using multiple layers. When I change the opacity of a layer, the checkered just appears. I just want to change the opacity but I don't want to see the checkered box effect when I change opacity.

You can add a white layer below the layer you are working on to it does not distract your artwork. Just turn it off or delete the  white layer when saving finished piece.

Photoshop displays the checkerboard pattern in areas with transparency. It's possible to change the appearance of this pattern via the Transparency & Gamut section within the Preferences. However, the simplest solution is probably to have the lowest layer within the Layers panel filled with a solid colour such as white.
