Color Overlay Not Working on Inverted Image

Hello, I inverted an image and tried putting in a color overlay to color it. Although that layer it lists a color overlay, the color did not change. How can I get the color overlay to work? Is there a better way to color in an inverted image?

This usually isn’t a bug — it’s how inverted images interact with blend modes.

A Color Overlay may appear to do nothing if the blend mode isn’t suitable or the contrast from inversion cancels it out.

Try this first:

Change the Color Overlay blend mode to Color, Overlay, or Multiply
Make sure Opacity and Fill aren’t at 0
Confirm you’re applying it to the correct (unlocked) layer

Better options:

Hue/Saturation adjustment layer (enable Colorize)
Solid Color adjustment layer set to Color or Overlay
Gradient Map (works especially well on inverted images)

Adjustment layers are usually more reliable than Color Overlay for recoloring inverted images.

You’re using a Color Overlay layer style, right?

It should work as well as it does with a non-inverted image, but it depends on which color combined with which Blend Mode. Some combinations may produce no change.

What is the color value applied to the Color Overlay style?

What is the Blend Mode applied to the Color Overlay style?

If the Opacity of the Color Overlay style is less than 100%, what is it?

If you are specifically trying to “colorize” the entire image with a single color, then the Blend Mode should be Color.

These points are shown in the demo below. (Sorry for the bad color quality, the compressed GIF animation I uploaded looks smooth but the Adobe forum software degrades the color quality.)

Thank you for getting back to me.

The color value is R: 22, G:230, B: 232

The blend mode is Multiply

Opacity is at 100%

I tried changing the blend style, but the bird still ends up as white.

The first thing I notice is that in the screen shot that was attached, the Effects visibility (eye) icon for the “bird” layer is hidden, so Effects are disabled. Because Effects are disabled, the eye icon for the Color Overlay item is dimmed to indicate that Color Overlay isn’t visible right now. Does it work if you click the visibility column for the Effects item that I circled, to turn on that eye icon and make Effects visible for that layer?
