Command+S does not overwrite JPEG'S anymore?

Usually, when I open a JPEG and change it, I could overwrite the existing file with command+S as long as it stayed one layer.

Now, for whatever reason, it opens up the »Save As« window. I have to then navigate to the file, and overwrite it »manually«. The weird part is, when I now want to close the JPEG-file, Photoshop asks me if I want to overwrite the changed JPEG-file? Clicking yes does the same... open up »Save as« window ...

This slows the work process because before, I could just hit save and it overwrote my file.

Seem very much like a bug.

If you crop with the option to retain cropped pixels, the previously flattened Background layer becomes a floating layer, invalid for direct saving as a JPEG as it no longer meets the restrictive JPEG specifications.

It has to be flattened for JPEG.

The "one layer" is a special type of layer "Background" from the flatten image command (It can't just be a regular layer capable of transparency named Background).

JPEG only supports 8 BPC (check your bit depth under Image > Mode), It doesn't support Alpha Channels (check your channels panel) and as previously mentioned, it has to be flattened.

Stephen I didn't think that one through, did I. 🙂

I've now tested it just in case, and as expected, Ctrl S no longer works if a previously saved JPG has a layer added.

Check the original file properties. i.e. is it write protected?

What are your file handling Preferences? Is it set to a local drive?  If it is using iCloud, for instance, could you be signed out or similar.

There is no way in this world that the Photoshop Development team would remove the ability to 'quick save'.

I can't reproduce your inability to Save. Can you attach a screenshot and/or flesh out the steps to edit your JPGs? btw, operating system/version, Ps version?
