It may help if we could see your Photoshop System Info. Launch Photoshop, and select Help >System Info...and copy/paste the text in a reply.

I'm at a loss. The log file indicates that it errors when trying to place the files, but I don't know what would cause that with just jpg files.

What type of files are you using: jpg, psd, etc?

Still I am getting the same error

So far, the only thing that I could find is turning off your graphic processor in the preferences. The log file stated an error code of "-50", and this link offeres a solution to that.
