Content Aware Fill – "Crop Expand Image" – Bug – PS 27.9.1

Hi,

Expanding the image while using the Crop Tool (the color in this case, about a solid gray) using Content Aware Fill - makes wrong color, in my case after expanding a lighter frame at the previous image edge borders and a lighter gray color is used for the expanded areas. Is this a known bug? I’ve downgraded to 27.8, no issues there.

Thank you,
Patrik

@Sameer K Hi Samer, The bug is in 16 bit. I always work in 16 bit. I hope this can be solved quickly. I did upload a video, with a reply. Not sure why it didn't got through. Anyway I hope for a fast bug fix. Thank you!

Been reporting this issue as well. I found the bug is in 16bit. And I only working in 16 so a major issue. Please fix, report to developers. Thank you!

I tired uninstalling and resetting the application and nothing was fixed, trying to go through all settings to find the issue but am not having any luck. Anyone else having content-aware fill issues with v27.10 of photoshop? Desperate for an answer!

Hi @Schaller Creative, Thanks for trying those steps! Let's try a few other things and see if they help.

Check GPU settings — Go to Edit → Preferences → Performance, ensure "Use Graphics Processor" is on, then click Advanced Settings and try Basic mode.
Adjust the sampling area — In the Content Aware Fill workspace, paint over the green overlay to exclude irrelevant areas. This often dramatically improves results.

If none of these steps work, can you try rolling back to a previous version of Photoshop and see if you are still experiencing an issue with Content Aware Fill? I hope this helps! ^CH

The GPU settings does not give me the option to revert to the Basic mode mentioned. The options given are as follows:

Use OpenCL

Anti-alias Guides and Paths

GPU compositing

Hi @Schaller Creative

Apologies for the inconvenience caused by this issue, and thank you for reporting it. To help us investigate, could you please provide a few additional details?

Does the issue occur with all files or only with specific files?
If possible, please share a short screen recording showing the issue, including the steps you follow when straightening or cropping the image and using Content-Aware Fill.
Please share your Photoshop System Info by going to Help > System Info > Copy and pasting it in your reply.
If the issue is reproducible with a specific file, please share a sample file with us, if possible.

Also, could you please try resetting Photoshop preferences after backing up your preferences folder? You can follow the steps here: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/desktop/get-started/settings-and-preferences/reset-preferences.html#:~:text=Manually%20reset%20preferences

Once done, please let us know if resetting the preferences makes any difference.

Ever since the latest update of Photoshop (version 27.10), the content-aware fill tool has been rendered useless. When using this tool, it will bug out when i straighten an image out or will fail when cropping an image. When I go to cancel the content-aware fill load screen, it will not cancel and I have to force quit out of Photoshop. Because of this issue, my usual editing speed has been significantly slowed down. I rely on this tool heavily for my job and without it working correctly, it is causing delays for complete projects and unnecessary stress.

Hi @Sameer K
The OS update to 26.6.2 (25G83) did not make any changes to the issue. I use the CAF expanding each workday so this a major issue for me. I noticed the issue seems to only appear on the bottom and the right side of the image (don’t matter what image/color of background). I can for now no longer update PS. The version working without issues is 27.8.0. I provide a video, not sure it help you though. I hope you can report this to the developers. I would appreciate this. I attach a video of expanding image in PS Beta version 27.11.0. Thanks.

Hey, @patrikl. Welcome to the Photoshop Community. I'll help you figure this out. Please share the system info from Photoshop Help > System info > Copy & paste into a text document > upload & attach here.

Does the problem exist if you use Photoshop (beta)? Get Photoshop (beta) from the Apps section > Beta Apps in the Creative Cloud desktop app. Please ensure there are no stale preferences in your Photoshop. You can go to the location of the preference folder below and rename it to back it up. (https://adobe.ly/3u7u84j)

This method is more effective compared to the in-app Reset Preferences at quit method.

macOS: Hold down the Option key in the Finder when using the Go menu. The library will appear below the current user's home directory.

Library > Preferences > Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings

Rename the Adobe Photoshop folder by adding a .old at the end. (Adobe Photoshop 2026 > Rename > Adobe Photoshop 2026.old)

This will give Photoshop a fresh start as a new installation.

Let me know if it helps. Thanks!

Hi @Sameer K

Yes the issue persists with Beta and the deleted Settings.

I will upload System Info and a image sample of the issue (using Crop Tool expanding image with Content Aware Fill setting).

Thanks,

P

Thanks for adding the system info. I've tried to recreate this on macOS v26.6.2, but the CAF worked as expected. So, updating the macOS may help here.

If that does not help, could you record your workflow in a video and share that?

Thanks!

Thank you,

Patrik

Expected: Content-Aware Crop should use pixels from the original image as sampling material, but only generate/fill pixels in the newly expanded canvas area.

Actual: In Photoshop 27.9.1, Content-Aware Crop also modifies and blends pixels inside the original image bounds. This can distort products/models near the crop boundary. In professional retouching this is destructive because original product pixels must remain unchanged.

This behavior appears to have changed after a recent Photoshop update. Previous versions did not modify the original image area in the same workflow.
