Content Aware Fill Hard Edges

I just (very regrettably) updated Photoshop and content aware fill not does not work correctly.  In this case, I use it for sky fill on 360 drone images that have been processed into a cube map.  The top image has a black hexagon where the drone camera cannot shoot straight up.  It "was" a simple process,  Quick Selection Tool the black area, expand the selection 10 pixels, content aware fill and finished.  Now you get a preview, but when you except, you see the hard edge of the selection.  It does not blend into the rest of the sky at all.  Hardly a "Fill".

I would love for the AI fill to work, however I haven't been able to get it to stop creating goofy picture frames around the selection using black-to-sky gradients in various patterns.  The gist is:  AI to too stupid to know that an aware fill is supposed to seamlessly blend into the unselected areas.

Something tells me I can to it, but now after 20 clicks instead of 3.  Gosh, I love imporvements.

Finally did another drone 360.  The _u (up) image of a cube map has the octagonal black hole in the sky to be filled (drone 360 software takes 8 slices of the scene).  Doing everything I said above, the ca fill had perfect seams when the filled octagonal selection was orthogonal.  The 4 selection seams at 45 degrees failed to blend into the background in this case.

Interesting. Definitely botched algorithms as it always worked seamlessly regardless of selection edge orientation to the canvas.

When you use the Quick Selection Tool do you have Enhance Edge checked in the tool options bar?

ah, the good ol Enhance Edge that actually makes the edges worse.

Do you feather the selection before moving on to Content-Aware Fill?  I just ran a quick test and found the hard edges of the selection also noticeable until I feathered them.  Same with Photoshop 2022.

A tool that I like more than Content-Aware Fill is the new Remove Tool.  I find it works well enough that I usually don't even make a selection.  It's definitely work a try!

Have you tried resetting the photoshop preferences by going to Photoshop>Preferences (Settings)>General, clicking Reset Preferences On Quit and restarting photoshop?

On Windows it's Edit>Preferences>General.

Not sure why I did it, but I did it.
