Content Aware Fill Problems

At one time, I could extend my image by using the crop tool and Photoshop would automatically fill the new space by content aware.  In the last couple of updates, that went away and I cannot figure out how to get it back.  Every suggestion I find doesn't work and freezes up my computer (lasso tool, unticking a box).  I can't even get a screen shot to show the problem.  Can someone help me with this?  I am an artist, and not so tech savvy.  And Adobe, please, stop changing settings when you update.   Thanks everyone!!!

I can't show you any further steps bc that's when it locks up and it won't let me screen shot when it locks up.  Thanks for your help!!

nevermind---just figured it out.  Selected area with magic wand and edit>fill>content aware.  Just in case anyone else has problems 🙂

I see the Crop tools Content Aware option grayed out when I'm editing a document and the document has  a layer that is a vector layer or a smart object layer.   Its not grayed out for a background layer or multiple raster layer and it works in PS 2021.

»And Adobe, please, stop changing settings when you update.«

This is a user Forum, so you are not really addressing Adobe here, even though some Adobe employees thankfully have been dropping by.

Could you please post screenshots with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Options Bar, …) visible?
