Question

Could not complete your request because of a program error when I try to drag&drop or open photo

Photoshop 26.10

Windows 10 Pro 22H2

I used this last night to remove objects from about 20 pictures, the "open" function was working great, also with the exporting process. No problems. A bit later, I was starting another task, and all I was trying was to drag and drop a picture, remove the background, and collage it with another picture when this stubborn error kept appearing. I was expecting the picture to open on the canvas as a Layer and just do my thing from there. I restarted PS, I restarted computer, I did everything from the guides, I updated the drivers. I also used an older version, same problem. I don't know what else to do. Any suggestion is helpful

I’m having the same exact issue. Up until recently I’ve been able to drag and drop images onto my canvas perfectly fine, then it suddenly decided to start giving me this error message: “Could not complete your request because of a program error”. I opened Adobe Creative Cloud to update Photoshop, it’s using the latest version. I hid all layers and saved the file under a different name, then saved them one layer at a time, same error. I tried renaming my Photoshop folder to “Adobe Photoshop 2026.old” (I do not have an “Adobe Photoshop Beta” folder like the article described) and restarted my computer, same error. I renamed my “com.adobe.unifidedpanel” folder to “~com.adobe.unifiedpanel”, same error. I have no idea what to do.

The “Learn how to fix” button under the error window doesn’t even direct me to an article on this particular issue. It sends me to a page about saving files.
If anyone has a fix please let me know.

Hey, @valentin_9539. Welcome to the Photoshop Community. I'll need more info to help you figure this out.

Have you recently also updated Windows or any other drivers? Try these primary steps:

Go to the location of the preference folder below and rename it to backup.

  • Windows 10/11: Users/[user name]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop [version]/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings
  • You can press Press the Windows key > Enter 'Run' > Enter %APPDATA%\Adobe
  • Rename the Adobe Photoshop folder by adding a .old at the end. (Adobe Photoshop Beta > Rename > Adobe Photoshop Beta. old), You can restore these preferences later if needed.(https://adobe.ly/4860qM9)
  • Restart the computer.

These changes will give a fresh start to Photoshop as a fresh install. Let me know how it goes.

Thanks!

I tried this, it did not work. Photoshop is still not allowing me to drag and drop images onto my canvas.

I tried this too, it did not help. I’m able to save files just fine, Photoshop is just not allowing me to drag and drop images onto my canvas by giving me the message “Could not complete your request because of a program error”.
