Question

Could not open "filename.MOV" because the video file could not be opened.

Can't open new .MOV files in PS but they do run in LrC.  New files are 4K shot with Nikon Z8.  Is there a problem there?  Older .MOV files, also 4K, shot with Nikon D850 still open properly in PS.

Only the message in the subject line shows up, no other error boxes or messages.

PC running Win10Pro and I just updated PS to 25.5.1.

From LrC the Edit In options are all greyed out.  Tried exporting original from LrC to a different drive and open in PS but get the same message.

Thanks, Bill

I have the same issue. Shot a bunch of video off my new Nikon Zf. I even upgraded the Camera Raw plug-in and it still didn't help. I've read that downgrading to an older version of Photoshop might work. I'm going to try that next if I can't get this to work in PS 2025.

I tried downgrading my Photoshop and that didn't work.

I also bought the MS HEVC Extension and there was no change. I was always able to watch and preview in MS apps and Explorer. But I still can't open the .MOVs in Photoshop.

I'm starting to regret buying the Nikon ZF as I'm learning it encodes to H.265, which apparently is "too new" and advanced that many Adobe products do not support it. I'm going to try to open it in Premiere and re-encode it, or try to pull stills from there. If that's too much of a learning curve, I'm just going to download an encoder a friend recommended that they use often.

Rather than Quicktime (no longer supported and vulnerable according to most posts) I bought the HEVC extension from the Microsoft Store.  I'm now able to view videos directly in Windows but still get the same message when I try to open a file in PS.  Files are .MOV but encoded H.265 (8-bit) whereas previous ones would have been H.264.  Do I need to do anything in PS to get it to recognize the extension?  Still not sure that this is the problem or something else needs to be done.  thanks, Bill

I'm having this same issue. (.mov files from a Nikon Z8, Photoshop 2025, windows, h.265 codecs installed). Has anyone found a solution?
