Every time I open Photoshop 2020 I get this message "couldn't open the edit log file Photoshop Edit Log. Edit logging is disabled. " .  When I close it, Photoshop opens.  What is causing this dialogue box to open.  How to fix it?

In Photoshop's menus, go to Edit > Preferences > History Log..., and click Choose..., then navigate to \Users\YOURUSERNAME\Documents\Adobe, and pick Photoshop Edit Log.txt.  If there is no such file, I guess you can go to that directory and create a new text file there with that name.

This error usually comes up when you've told Photoshop and other Adobe apps to look for various files (logs, caches, etc.) on some other drive, then later removed or renamed the drive.  It can also happen if you just delete your ...\Documents\Adobe folder (you'll need to re-create it).  If that's the case, you may have to correct a whole bunch of paths in a whole bunch of Adobe apps.  Or you can fix/replace your other drive and re-establish all those expected custom paths and files on it from a backup.

Or you might get this error if you made that file or its containing folder read-only, or owned by another user (in that case google for "Windows 10 take ownership").

If you're using a Mac, the steps to fix this will be essentially corresponding, but Mac-flavored. E.g., your Documents path will be /Users/YOURUSERNAME/Documents, not \Users\YOURUSERNAME\Documents.
