Question

Create an Action to Save an Image to Jpeg from PS that has been sent to PS from LR Classic 24.4.1

When I send RAW images to PS from Lightroom classic I have several Actions I created which allow me to save a small jpeg of the image as a copy for Instagram into a specific folder and then close the image from PS without saving. This has worked for many years. (I do realise that the RAW images sent from LR to PS are not RAW anymore and that they are converted to TIFF's for editing). Now when I use the same Action the copied image is overwritten every time with the same file name! I have experimented with creating new actions to save a copy of a RAW image to a smaller Jpeg for Instagram by selecting ‘save a copy’ and changing TIFF to Jpeg, but every time the last image that was saved as a Jpeg is replaced by the latest file image I am saving when i run the action I have just created, so something has changed in this version of PS 26.4.1 which does not allow me to create an action to save copies of image files with different filenames without overwriting and replacing the image that was last saved! Hopefully, you understand my explanation. Can you assist in helping me create an Action which will save several images as individual new ‘copy’ files and not replacing or overwriting the previous file?

Regards, Ray. (London UK)

As my earlier screenshot showed, it is possible to record only the path without the filename, however, as with your case, a small handful of users have previously reported issues. I haven't had such an issue in any version of Photoshop, so I don't know why this works for the overwhelming majority of users but not a select few. In a previous topic, one affected user provided a video of the process and it did appear that this wasn't a case of user error when recording as they didn't go anywhere near the filename field, they only navigated and saved.

Hello Bojan. Success! I have played with your Batch idea and figured out how to create the unique file name using the origianl filename when saving. I was trying to amend the docuent name by adding an underscore and 'copy to the documnet name, but that causes every file to be named 'document name_copy'. You must not alter the document name when you select it from the drop down list and that then shows in the 'example of the file name' 'myfile-copy', but if you then add the word 'copy' in the the next rule you can indeed save the file with its original file name and the word 'copy' after it, just like the Action used to do before the latest Adobe updates. So you got me on the right track and I can now save any file using any action with its own unique file name. The only caveate is that there must be a save instrcuction in your Action. I am adding the batch process screenshot here for any one else with the same issue, follow this and you should be able to use all your Actions to create new unique saved copies! Thanks again for all your help. Cheers, Ray.

Hi Bojan, well you've very nearly succeded in this advice. It does work using Batch Automate run the action and save a the jpeg file where I want it to and closes the PS file withourt saving, but I cannot see anyway of creating a unique file name, as if run a batch of three, or one even, with a four digit seriel number it always starts the next batch at the starting seriel number, there doesn't ap[ear any way I can use the existing doument name with a 'copy' inserted after it to create a unique file? Nearly there though!

You can also test File > Automate > Batch with Override Action "Save As" Commands checked.

Hi Bojan. Yes, I realsie that but if I do not alter the filename the file name is STILL recorded in the Action and the Action overwrites to the same file name the next time the Ation is used.  If you clear the filename there is no way of saving the fle, the 'OK' option is greyed out.  Even if I save as a copy and PS inserts 'copy' after the filename the next file that is saved using the same Action adopts the file name that was last saved. Some people have said make sure the filename is not highlighted, but that doesnt work either, it is still recorded in the Action. I do not think There is a way to replicate the way the Action worked as it did before Adobes last updates, so I will just have to save a copy as normal outside of the Action, that is the only workaround I can see!

This section presents an issue (refer to the screenshot); do not alter the "File name" field when saving during recording.

Hello Bojan, I can see you have posted several suggestion on here to others suffering the same issue. I have tried all the options I can think of including the Preferences panel of 'Legacy "Save As" and "do not append "copy" options to no avail. I am going to show you two screen shots, the first is the original action, and as you will see in the "Save in" that the file or folder is not found, this is probabaly because I have changed the location of all my image files to a new drive, so that makes sense. However, when I edit the action to save in the new loaction with all the same steps as previousy the files saved always override the last file saved. If I use "save as" or "save a copy" as normal without an action the file copies do not overwrite each other, it isonly when they process steps are recoded as an action that th overwrite happens! I can't see any way around this?

Expand Save step in action, take screenshot and post it here.

You might also consider just Exporting directly from Lightroom.

It sounds like you have recorded both the filename and path, rather than just the path as shown in this example from a previous topic:

Can you post a similar screenshot or confirm?
