Crop to exact size does not work properly.

Photoshop version 26.0.0.    Windows 11.

For example:

  • I open a RAW file (Canon .CR2) in Lightroom, with dimensions 5472px x 3648px.
  • I do an external edit in Photoshop, with defaults set to File Format TIFF, resolution 300ppi.  It comes across with the same original dimensions, correct resolution set, but still showing as a .CR2 file in the tab header.
  • Click on the Crop tool and the crop frame appears round the edge of the image.  The Crop Mode is defaulted to W x H x Resolution.
  • Enter 3000 x 2000 x 300 in the toolbar (same ratio as original).  The crop frame does not move.  If I commit the crop (click on the tick) it resizes the whole image to 3000 x 2000, not cropping.
  • If I enter 2000 x 1000 the crop frame moves to be 5472 x 2736.  Accept crops to that ratio and resizes to 2000 x 1000.
  • If I then Save it (not Save As), it saves as a .tif file with the new dimensions.

Manipulating the crop frame by dragging corners seems to work ok.

Thanks,  the marquee tool route works fine for what I wanted.

If you need a particular pixel size crop from the full original, without any resampling, it may be easier to use the Rectangular Marquee tool. In the options bar there's a rolldown with three options: normal, fixed size, and fixed ratio. Set it to fixed size, and enter the required pixel size. Then just move/nudge the rectangle to where you want it and Image > Crop.

Apologies if I misunderstand what you want, there's a thousand ways to crop and/or resample an image... 🙂

OK.  I was misinterpreting various internet posts on "Crop to an exact size".  I was expecting that when I put in 3000 x 2000 the crop frame would shrink to contain an area exactly 3000 x 2000 pixels of the current image, i.e. without resampling.  This is difficult to do by dragging the handles.

Is there a way to set the crop frame to an exact size without then resampling?

I'm not seeing anything unexpected in your description. This is how it's supposed to work.

If you don't want resampling, clear the boxes. In general, explore the various parameters in the options bar to familiarize yourself with what they do.

PS.  I get the same effect on PSD files, and on Photoshop version 25.12.0.
