CUT Feature in Marquee tool

I'm selecting an area of an image in a project with the rectangle marquee tool, I click edit and CUT is not a highlighted option. I want to remove a piece of the jpeg image.

What operating system and version of Photoshop are you using?

Can you post a screenshot that includes the layers panel when you have the aforementioned jpeg open?

I went to the layer, right clicked and flattened the image and I could then cut the area but that doesn’t quite work for what I’m trying to do, but I can tell it’s the type of file, it’s a jpeg, I’ll have to convert the file somehow to be able to manipulate in specific ways.
