Disable automatic text box?

Previously when using photoshop I could click anywhere using the text tool and it would freely type from wherever I had clicked.  Now it just automatically draws a giant bounding box for the text.  How do I disable this?

Nevermind I figured it out. My mouse was bugging and somehow it was dragging while clicking resulting in the text box. Replaced the mouse and its all good.

For me it was switching between mouse and wacom-tablet. After drawing I used my mouse and had this problem. By using the pen again for the the text-tool it work as usual.

Just in case someone comes a cross this and doesn't have a buggy mouse 😉

If you click with the Type tool, Photoshop enters placeholder text and highlights that text. If you drag with the Type tool you get a specific area to type within.

If you want to click and not see the highlighted placeholder text, in Preferences, turn off "Fill New Type Layers With Placeholder Text".

That gets rid of the automatic fill in text. But what about the massive box that appears? It still shows up for me.
