Question

Do you prefer showing clients flat artwork first or realistic mockups? Why?

I was wondering how everyone approaches this.

When you're sharing a packaging design with a client for the first time, do you usually show the flat artwork or a realistic mockup? I can see benefits to both, so I'm curious what works best for you and why?

Very little packaging experience, personally, but a full mockup is always preferable for a couple of reasons:

    • I’ve known a lot of clients who were unable to parse the flat artwork into the 3D reality, even on a simple six-sided box, so the finished product was somehow not what they expected.
    • Some potentially problematic elements of a design - in terms of the artwork itself, cutting/folding guides, structural integrity, etc. - only become fully apparent when presented as a mockup.
