Does the presets backup contain all brushes? (mac)

Hi, I copied the presets folder from Macintosh HD/Applications/Adobe Photoshop 2025/Presets

But the brushes folder contains only two files: legacy brushes and converted legacy tool presets. Does this mean that if Photoshop erases all my brushes again, I'll have to re-import them and the backup won't help me with that?

Btw, if I need the back up, I will just move the files to the presets folder? Because I think it's dangerous to mess in the library folder unless you know what you're doing. It was a pain to find instructions about how to do the backup, because nothing is where it was. I wish Adobe made backups easier, I don't dare to update because last time I did Photoshop reverted to factory settings and I don't remember it being a major update, either.

That path leads to the computer-level presets folder. For brush presets you personally saved, you might also try looking in the Library/Preferences folder under your specific user account, although maybe you already know that because you mentioned the “library folder”.  Adobe documents that path as

Users/[user name]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings

and that folder stores a wide range of user-changed settings.

So that’s within the user-level Preferences folder, not at the computer level in the Presets folder under Application Support, and is also not a computer-level preferences folder.

That path comes from the Adobe help article

Preference file functions, names, locations | Photoshop

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/preference-file-names-locations-photoshop.html

…which is very useful for making sure I restore all of my Photoshop settings from backups during computer migrations or after a major problem.

Yes, lots of companies could do better at that. What I do is just make sure I maintain a current backup of my entire Mac so that everything is covered. If anything goes wrong the settings for any software I use, I just go and copy the last known good version of that application’s user data files out of the backup. For guidance about finding Photoshop settings files, I use the help article linked above.

If you study the document linked above, you’ll notice that most Photoshop user settings are in subfolders under only a few main paths. So if all of my Photoshop settings get reset, to restore them in the fewest number of steps I would go get the backup and restore these folders first:

  • Users/[user name]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings
  • Users/[user name]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop [version]/Presets/

That would take care of most Photoshop settings, because the majority of your Photoshop settings are in subfolders within those two folders. According to that help article, non-Adobe plug-ins and a few specific features such as lens profiles and color management may store settings files in other places though.

Thank you, I totally forgot that I still have Users/[user name]/Library/ because it's hidden, in my old mac it wasn't. *facepalm* Somehow I thought that all settings are now stored somewhere else. No wonder I didn't find the correct folders.

Save out your brushes to an .asl file that you can easily reload later. Keep in a safe place. You do this from the panel flyout menu. Same for custom actions.

Is this the same thing as exporting brushes? Because I can't seem to find anything else, and exporting saves them as .abr to Users/[user name]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop [version]/Presets/

Might that be the feature Adobe removed?
