Downsizing image didn't lower the file size.

I was working on an image in PS 2024 and somehow the image size was huge, maybe 33" x 20" (guessing) at 300 dpi  and the file size was 1.96 GB.  I changed the image size to 7.5" x 5" at 300 dpi. The Image size changed, but the file size is still 1.96 GB.  The lower left of the PS window shows the new size 7.5" x 5" at 300 dpi, the Finder on my Mac shows the correct Image Size, but the file size is 1.96 GB. Another photo app also shows the file size as 1.96 GB. 

 

I have used PS for many years, changed the image size hundreds of times, and never ran into this issue. Why is the file size still 1.96 GB. FYI I worked on variations of this image in different saved versions, and all have the same problem.

    Ahhh, I understand what happened now. I was using Generative Fill on parts of my image and i still had multiple layers with rejected Generative Fill. I usually like to save unused layers so i can see my alternate ideas at a later time. Evidently i shouldn't save unused Generative fill layers. My file size dropped to 40MB.  Thanks for making me re-look at my file.

    Please provide the file. 

     

    Does the file contain Smart Objects or off-canvas content, what are the Color Mode and Bit Depth, are there additional Channels, …?

        Thanks but unfortunately that didnt solve my issue. There was no photoshop:DocumentAncestors metadata associated with it, that i could find.
