Drawing Using the Line Tool while also keeping the line as a brush stroke/non-object

I'm just a bit confused on how the line tool works. I've tried searching for this specific feature, but can't seem to find any guides on how to do it. I'll activiate it on accident, and it's really convenient until I accidentally deactiviate it. I don't know how I did it, or how I undid it.

I want to use the line tool to be able to draw straight lines in any direction, but on the same layer I'm currently working on. I don't want to create a new shape layer, and I don't want my lines to be objects. I want the line tool to act as a simple brush stroke, similar to holding shift to make a straight 45 or 90 degree line with the brush.

If you want to make straight lines with a brush, you can click the first dot, hold Shift, and then click the next dot to make a straight line.
