Enter Key Exiting Out Of Text Box Instead Of Creating New Line

This has happened to me on my work computer (HP Probook) and my personal computer (MacBook Pro), running the latest version of Photoshop. Every now and then, the enter key will stop working. Instead of creating a new line, it will exit the text box. Forced line breaks do the same thing. On my MacBook, it appears to be caused when I have my project management software (ClickUp) open simultaneously with Photoshop.

The issue can usually be resolved by closing both programs and then reopening Photoshop. On my work computer, however, the entire machine needs to be restarted to resolve the issue. This is incredibly frustrating, because I have to use the SSO TFA login every time the computer cycles power. It is a pain in the butt. Feeling very peeved.

One question that might be useful for troubleshooting is “which Enter key?” Because it almost seems like it randomly switches between the behaviors of the two different Enter keys (which of course it should not). If you don't already know what I mean, read on for the details…

When a type layer is in text editing mode (blinking text cursor or selected characters), this is how it’s been working (normally, anyway) for many years in Photoshop on both macOS and Windows:

  • If you press the Enter/Return key on the main keyboard, it enters a paragraph return (new paragraph).
  • If you press the Enter/Return key on the numeric keypad, it performs the equivalent of “Apply” or “OK” in that it applies pending edits and exits the editing mode. This would definitely apply and exit text editing mode for a type layer.
  • If the Fn key is also pressed, the function of the Enter/Return key on the main keyboard may change to work like the Enter/Return key on the numeric keypad. This is definitely true on Macs, and makes it possible to have the numeric keyboard behavior even on compact keyboards with no numeric keypad.

If you’re seeing the behavior only when pressing the Enter/Return key on the main keyboard, then the next thing to do is make sure the Fn key is not also being pressed, and that there is no background software that might modify the way the Enter/Return key works.

Editing to add that I have entirely ruled out ClickUp as a contributor to the issue. I have closed all background tasks using the Task Manager and confirmed that all programs and tasks I can close out of have been terminated. The problem continues, and the only solution is to restart my device. This bug occurs on both my work account and personal account, as well as on my work PC and personal Mac. This problem is not a one-off; there is a bug, and I cannot find any assistance for it. Why the heck do we pay so much for these services if bugs like these are not addressed quickly and efficiently??

Hi @the_arc_8873, welcome to the community!
I wasn’t able to reproduce this issue on my end. Could you let me know which version of Photoshop you’re using? If you can share a quick screen recording of the problem, that would really help us look into it further.
As a first step, you might also try resetting the Type tool. Just right-click the “T” icon in the Options bar at the top and select “Reset Tool” or “Reset All Tools.”
Thanks so much!
