Question

ESC, Delete/ Backspace no longer working with the Polygonal Lasso

When creating a selection with the polygonal lasso I used to be able to use the ESC key to exit out of the selection. Also, using the delete or backspace key used to allow me to go pack to a previous point in my selection. Neither of these functions are working for me anymore on Windows 10 Pro 64bit and Photoshop 23.4.2

I've made some changes to try and improve this very annoying problem. As far as we can tell, this bug only affects Windows users. If there are any Mac OS Users who are experiencing this problem, we would like to know and we will need to open a new and different bug for investigation.

Please try Adobe Photoshop (Beta) Version: 26.8.0 20250528.m.3090 or later. Please note the date code "20250528".

As I write this, a build with a date code later than this, and build number higher than "m.3090" should be available in the Beta Release of Photoshop some time later this week. When it appears, please give it a try.

We have not been able to reproduce this issue on Mac OS. Are you using just a Mouse? Or is a Pen/Touch device involved? Does it reproduce reliably for you on PS 26.7? Any non-standard plugins? Are Contextual Task Bars enabled for you?

We'll need to reproduce the issue on Mac OS in order to make progress. So anything that can aid duplicating your environment would be helpful.

Can confirm this is still broken. This has been broken for years now. What are these developers doing? Stop innovating if you can't keep basic functions working. It costs us lots of time and money when work takes longer to complete. [insult removed]

I've experienced the same thing on Windows 10 and 11. Sometimes, it works, and sometimes, it doesn't. It's unbelievable. Two years and no solution.

EDIT: This is random, sometimes it works, sometimes not. Also, you will loose multiple CTRL+Z undo.

I was experiencing the same issue. Then I looked at Preferences > Keyboards Shortcuts and Menus and activated "Use Legacy Undo Shortcuts". Restarted and SHIFT+Backspace seems to work properly with Lasso tool. Please try and let me know.

I can confirm peter.akuratny's solution does work. Lasso tool now works as expected. and the undo isn't that big a deal since ctrl+alt+z was already undo/step backwards

Then after restarted again, it stopped working.

It's incredible how Adobe can't maintain the stability of tools that have been around for decades! With every innovation, a bug comes to annoy the user! Very annoying!

I can confirm that this bug is still there. In 2025. Since forever I've also had issues with the use of alt key on Photoshop with Windows, forcing me to hit the "esc" key multiple times. That bug never got fixed, instead Adobe would claim it's a Windows issue (the "alt" key prompting the menu by default). Then maybe Adobe developers should open another app on their computer just to see how other editors have apparently found a way to avoid issues. I've been using 3DS Max the entire day for 5 years and not a single time the "alt" key has been an issue. I'm mentioning this "alt" key issue because maybe these problems are related, i don't know, it should be Adobe's work to find a solution, not the customers. Thanks to other users here, the workaround with alt+spacebar is satisfying enough, but not a fix.

So tired of Adobe and their complete disrespect for consumers. [abuse removed] Enough with the features no one asked for. Fix the functionality. Make our lives easier, like tech promised it would. Seriously, get rid of the executive board and get actual engineers, programmers, and workers to steer the ship.

Also, enough with the community badges and notes and flare, etc. This isn't Facebook. We're looking for answers for our tools to function so we could work so we could eat. Cut the cutsie act. We want actual solutions, not a pat on the back for posting a question.

It's 2025, and the issue is still there. I honestly don't know what the new updates are for—just to add a number to the 'Photoshop' title and change the startup image? Adobe keeps suggesting, 'Restore the preferences,' 'Reinstall the program,' but that doesn’t seem to help. At this point, I’m considering switching to another program. It’s too expensive to keep dealing with the same unresolved bugs year after year

It's 2025 and the bug persists. I have it across six machines - PC and OSX. I'm tired of Adobe getting in the way of paying work while adopting an accelerated update schedule that means updates are not tested. My company is hovering over alternate and less expensive options.

FIX / WORKAROUND: Hold SHIFT on your first click, then release shift. I can't take credit, someone else, somewhere posted this, but when I logged in to upvote and reply, this forum, works about as good as their software and put me on some other random page. BUT, this works, been using this method all evening on a project and is now burned into my brain / workflow.
