Explanation of diffusion dither in Photoshop

What is the diffusion algorithm for diffusion that is present in the Save for Web option in the Export section? Can I find documentation of it online? Is Floyd-Steinberg a similar/same algorithm?

My guess is that this comes under the category of "trade secret". Adobe don't usually disclose such details.
