Export is for web/screen/mobile devices where ppi is irrelevant.

So the ppi metadata are stripped from the file altogether. An exported file does not have a ppi value at all, not 96, not 300, not 72. It's just pixels.

The 96 number appears when the file is reopened into another app. Most of them need to assign some ppi number for other reasons, but any number will do.

Microsoft apps assign 96. Adobe apps assign 72.
