Eyedropper Freezing and Greyed Out PS After Color Choice

This is probably (hopefully?) a simple fix - but I am at a loss. I have an image that I am adding a caption to - which I've done many times with photos. But now, when I select the text in the text box and then use the eyedropper tool to choose the color for the text (from an item on the photo), it freezes in "eyedropper mode" I can't choose another layer, tool, menu item or anything. It won't even let me save it, which is super-frustrating. Then I have to force close it.
Any advice on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
