File type issue

I am shooting JPEG+RAW on my Canon camera. When I plug in my card to view the photos all of the RAW files show up as Adobe Lightroom files. When I try to open these in Photoshop I get some kind of warning message (can't remember what it says) and then the photo photo appears to be black and white. 

Does anyone know what I may have done to cause this to happen?

    Can you tell us your OS, PS, and LR versions? If you can give us a screenshot of the error message, that would be very helpful.
