Fill not available for selections in Photoshop CC 20.0.1

I just updated my copy of Photoshop CC to 20.0.1. I edited a file from Lightroom, used the polygonal lasso tool to define a selection, then right clicked on the selection. That opens a menu of actions one can take, but the one I want, fill, is not selectable. You can't click it. It always worked before. Am I suddenly doing something wrong or is this a bug? Is there a fix? Thanks.

Correct answer davescm

Check the layers panel. Are you on a pixel layer or a layer that can't be edited directly with out opening or rasterising (such as a smart object)

Solved??  NOT!!  I've looked at everyone's suggestions, including updating to the most recent version (20.0.2), and the content aware fill is still greyed out!!  I have taken it from LR CC, brought it in directly to PS CC, rasterized it, smart object'ed it, made a duplicate layer, tried using it in an unlocked background, etc. Zero zilch nada!!!  Any other suggestions??

Same problem.  All menu options are greyed out.  Can't save the selection I just made and now have lost time as others have too.  Problem cripples almost any LR>PS workflow.  Hopeful for a quick update by Adobe to solve this.

Thanks for the user generated workaround by opening up PS first, then LR.  Hope this problem will be removed from production release soon.

I am under Windows 10 working as a user. My LR can be launched only with administrative rights (otherwise it doesn't launch at all while PS can). The workaround of launching PS first (in order not to have greyed menus) didn't work for me unless I launch PS as administrative too.

Good to know.  Thanks for sharing, Mihhalich

This is still happening for me.  As soon as I tried "Edit in Photoshop" from Lightroom, the same issue is back.  This needs to be fixed.

Have you tried the soloution in the earlier post, i.e. with both applications closed, open Photoshop first and leaving it open, open Lightroom. Then use Edit in Photoshop

Ahhh, I was trying to Open lightroom, Edit in Photoshop, then close and re-open Lightroom.  Had it wrong.  Your process works fine.  Woohoo!  Back in business!  Thank you, davescm!

I am experiencing this issue in version 20.0.1 20181029.r.41 2018/010/29: 1197484  x64, updated on 12/26/18.

I did the reset preferences thing (Hold ALT+SHIFT+CTRL on starting Photoshop) and this appears to have cleared the issue.

I can confirm that this is an issue on my system as well. Only solution that worked was to start Photoshop first and then launch from Lightroom at which time Topaz Labs, ParticleShop and OnOne were then available. I updated Nvidia drivers, rebooted and even went as far as disabling GPU acceleration and none had any effect. I guess for now I'll just make sure and start Photoshop before opening LIghtroom. Seems pretty severe to me as it changes my workflow for sure!

Got confronted with the same problem this morning. Finally found this thread and after closing and opening LR (While PS kept running) solved the problem.

This made a nice dent in my productivity today. Thanx Adobe. Maybe a free month of use as a compensation?

Just adding my two cents. I too just received an update to Lightroom Classic CC (version 8.1, Camera Raw 11.1) and when I right click on an image and select "Edit in", "Edit in Adobe Photoshop 2019..."photoshop" opens, but ALL menu items that do any image manipulation are ghosted (edit, image, layer, type, select, filter). I have tried the suggestion on this forum of opening photoshop first, then lightroom, then doing the "Edit In" and it appears to work (menu options are available like "select all").

I agree with Mcgarrity that this is such a major use case, Adobe has not noticed before before? Please update.

Having all of these same issues.

Downloaded the new update and it seemed to break everything.

Tried opening photoshop first before lightroom. That still didnt fix anything. Fill is still greyed out no matter what I do. Did not have these issues 1 hour ago before updating.

Just upgraded to Photoshop cc 2019 - as in 30 minutes ago
Just went to photomechanic to open a file to be edited in photoshop, as I did yesterday and the last year

created a selection with the lasso tool- want to use content aware
All edit options in menu are greyed out.

created a background copy to see if this was a new locked layers idea
no dice
found this thread...none of that relates as an antecedent to my problem, and none of the solutions do anything.
clearly this is some kind of file read only thing with this version where by the PS won't take the image.

What I do not have time for is having to search thousands of images from an event each time I want to open a file in photoshop, I should, as routinely advertised, be able to open the file being used in one program, in this case photo mechanic, inside of photoshop.

tired long workarounds are not solutions, they are more trouble then they are worth.
Adobe, please address

thanks

What worked for me, the once or twice I’ve tried it, is to open Photoshop first, then open Lightroom and then use the Edit in link to Photoshop. When I did that, the items were not grayed out. I have not had time to try this fix out thoroughly. I agree, it is a pain and it is something Adobe should be working on. Good luck.

Not an option here,
1- Didn't use lightroom at all in this situation- used photo mechanic
2- had photoshop opened first already
But thanks for trying!
what a way to spend the day, I knew it was a good idea not to get rid of cc 2015.5

A screen capture would help.   I do not use LR  did the image open is Photoshop as a background layer or as a smart object layer.  If A smart object layer fill is not possible.  You need to add a layer the fill will work on.
