Question

From bitmap selection to exact path

I cannot for the life of me get a precise path from a bitmap/pixel selection.
I make a selection [object selection tool] (typical of a packshot with white background).
I then go go path > make work path from selection.
but the selection becomes awful, the curves become bended and any straight lines becomes curvy.

Is there another way?

What is the goal? To make a vector clipping path for use in another application? Or a vector layer mask? Or To make a raster layer mask with cleaner edges than with standard pixel-based selections?

What is the width and height of the selection in pixels? Converting to a path is more precise for higher resolution subjects. For lower resolution subjects, it has to do more guessing as to where the path should go.

The most precise way is to trace the subject manually using a path drawing tool such as the Pen tool, but this is slow. It goes faster if you’re trained on path drawing tools and path editing.

Also, it’s a very basic feature. If you need to adjust how paths are created (tight/loose, more points/fewer points, more curves/more corners), it might be better to use the Image Trace feature in Adobe Illustrator if your subscription includes that application.

Hey, @Lasse36499275tbfw. Welcome to the Photoshop Community. I'll need more information to help you figure this out. Please share a video of the issue and the system info from Photoshop Help > System info > Copy and paste into a text document > Upload and attach here.

Does it behave as mentioned after a specific set of steps? What troubleshooting steps have you tried already?

Also, please test and confirm if the issue exists with Photoshop (Beta). You can get Photoshop (beta) from the Creative Cloud > Apps tab > Beta Apps section.

Thanks!
