Generative AI "The service is not responding"

Hi there,

I've been getting this error message "The service is not responding. Please check your internet and try again" constantly since last week. It was working perfectly before then on the beta version. I've tried deleting the beta version and work with Photoshop v25.0 which has generative ai function but keep getting stuck at 100%. On top of that, it seems to work randomly when I connect to my phone's hotspot but it fails again after a few minutes. I'm on a mac and I've tried to disable the firewall as suggested by some people but still doesn't seem to work.

Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

Found a solution using a VPN.

Close the app (PS) from task manager, open your VPN app (I tested this with Hostspot shield VPN), connect to any location (I'm from Colombia so I connected to a US virtual address), reopen PS. After that the Generate Tool should work with no issues.

This was tested with both PS beta (Version 26.8) and Regular PS (26.7)

For anyone else coming across this: I worked with Adobe support and found that the issue was due to DNS resolution failing for specific hosts. The short list of hosts they gave me to test related to generative AI tools are:

firefly.adobe.io
firefly-clio-imaging.adobe.io
*.ff.adobe.io (highly critical wildcard domain covering feature-specific endpoints such as:)
  di-me.ff.adobe.io (Generative Fill/Expand image upload)
  upsampler-v1.ff.adobe.io (Generative Upscale)
di-imaging.ff.adobe.io (Select Subject and Object Imaging)
  di-imaging-genharm. ff.adobe.io (AI Harmonization)
  filix3.ff.adobe.io

I happened to be using Fortinet’s DNS servers, which weren’t resolving anything but the first entry on that list.  I changed my DNS server to 1.1.1.1, which worked around the issue.  This also explains why turning on a VPN fixes it - Doing so typically overrides your DNS server with one from the VPN provider.

Make sure you can nslookup and ping each of the above hosts. If you can’t, change your network’s DNS server.

Hi @avid_leaderc41f,

Thank you for sharing what resolved this for you. I’m glad you were able to trace the issue to DNS resolution.

This is also a useful context for users who find that Generative AI works on a mobile hotspot or VPN but not on their regular network, as that can indicate a network/DNS-related issue rather than an issue with Photoshop itself.

For anyone seeing similar behavior, please also check with your network administrator before changing DNS settings, particularly on a managed or corporate network.

Thanks again for sharing your findings with the community. Please let us know if you need any further help.

Best,
Anshul Saini

This kind of error makes my workflow far more slower, i'd rather spend 20 minutes of manual editing rather than wasting an hour waiting for this "feature" to complete a 250*250 144pi generative fill. internet speed : 200+mbps, no firewall/blocker whatsoever, updated to latest version, cache cleared... everytime i sees this kind of thread usually no clear resolve or solution from the team. i've subbed to adobe apps for a decade but so far this is the most disappointing aside for the payment backend mess.
