I would like to keep the original layer's name when merged with generative fill layer. The original layer names are descriptive of the subject and I would like to keep them that way. How to keep original layer name?

It will depend on the order of the layers, which layer/s are targeted/selected and the method used to merge.

If you "Merge Down" with only the upper layer selected using Ctrl/Cmd + E, the lower "receiving" layer name is retained, while the upper selected layer name is lost.

If you "Merge Layers" with both the upper and lower layers selected using Ctrl/Cmd + E, the upper layer name is retained, while the lower layer name is lost.

If you "Merge Visible" using Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + E, then the selected layer name is retained, or the upper layer if multiple layers or no layers are selected.

Perhaps you could post a screenshot of the layers panel and or describe in more detail the layer positions, which layers are selected and which merge commands are used.
