Gradient blend for images to colour

Hi trying to add a gradient to each end of various images to use in banners on a website.  Ie if I have a block colour #0b79b2 on each end of the banner container and the image sides blend into block colour of the container.

I tried using feather but this of course feathers all around the image not just the ends.

I also tried with gradients and layer masks.  I added the blue to the ends and black to the centre and applied it to the layer mask but only a very thin layer of the blue colour was applied which doesnt then blend in with the block colour at either side of the image.  I hope I have explained myself well enough.  Sometimes its clear in your head but not to others.  I have attached a couple of screenshots to help.

I hope I have posted in the right forum .. it was the only one that mentioned photoshop.

Correct answer davescm

I give up .. thanks everyone for trying to help I have no idea what any of you are explaining.  Please close this thread and I will try some other way to get the desired effect.

@broomeGirl You were almost there further up the thread. Did you try moving the gradient edges inwards to match the image, rather than the canvas, as I showed in my earlier post?

Another option could be using Gradient Layers and Clipping Masks.

Thanks but not really sure how to replicate your answer, sorry.  Not sure why there is a green fill layer or how to do the groups but I appreciate your response 🙂

The green layer is irrelvant.

One can Clipping Mask a Layer to a Group (with Fill 0% and »Blend Clipped Layers as Group«) that contains a Gradient Layer.

And if more Gradients are needed the setup can be repeated inside the Group.

It sounds like you are trying to achieve something like this.

The gradient (black to white to black) is on the mask for the image

Hi yes this is the look I am going for .. I cant seem to get the colour density as shown in your image and not sure what you mean re the gradient is on the mask for the image.  What is that little icon on the image layer in the corner?  See screenshot.  Thanks

@broomeGirl You need to bring in the edges of your gradient so that the black starts at the end of the image, rather than the edge of the canvas. That way the image will fade out entirely at the edge. Where the mask is black, the associated layer is transparent and the layer(s) below are visible. Where the mask is white the associated layer is fully visible. Grey becomes semi transparent. So it is just a matter of aligning your gradient so that the appropriate sections become visible.

The icon just indicates that I placed my image as a smart object. It makes no difference to the use of the gradient mask in this example.
