Gradient overwrites previous gradient

Hi all - 

 

I was using Photoshop '23 - updated to '24 in hopes of fixing the problem of gradients overwriting previous gradients in a mask. I am using "Classic" gradients. This issue just popped up a few days ago - Is there a setting that got tweaked or have I bumped into a bug? I'm on a Mac.  Thanks -

    What is the Blend Mode for the Gradient tool?

      Your description seems incomrehensible to me. (Edit: What does »overwriting« signify here and should it not replace the existing Gradient on a Layer Mask?)

      Could you please post screenshots with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Options Bar, …) visible? 

       

      Have you tried »Classic Gradient«? Edit: Sorry, sloppy reading.
