Gradient tool classic mode not working properly

In 24.7, the gradient tool does not provide a smooth gradient over the distance the cursor is pulled. Instead, every attempt results in the same very short gradient transition. 

I use the gradient tool all the time in masking and am used to being able to easily create a smooth gradient over the distance required, from a relatively abrupt transition up to a smooth gradient across the entire image.

The first thing I did was set the gradient tool to 'classic' in the hope that would revert to the old tool version, but that doesn't fix it.

Would be grateful for any suggestions. 

Is this a bug, or is there some other way I now need to do this with the new tool?
