gradient tool not working on adjustment layer's mask

When I try ad add a gradient to a adjustment layer’s mask it mostly work but sometimes it just won’t let me add any gradient.

I’ve tried different settings for the gradient but the only thing that works is restarting Photoshop.
Using the Gradient tool normally works fine, and it seems to be mostly affected if the mask has values in it already ( if I’ve painted parts out )

It’s on Photoshop 27.10.0 and has been going on for quite a few months now.
