Question

HDR layers in Photoshop

Hi there folks

I have a question regarding HDR in Photoshop. That is the new HDR - the one with brighter pixels.

How do I view and export HDR content in and from Photoshop, when the HDR material is represented as a layer? The exported image is intended for Instagram.

My screen has just one stop of HDR headroom. Is this the problem? I can see how much headroom it has in the histogram of Adobe Camera Raw and Lightroom.

A few details:

I’ve flicked on ‘Precise colour management for HDR display’ in the Technology Previews section of preferences.

The document I’ve tried to use for HDR images has a workspace with a colour depth of 32 bit and is 1080x1350 pixels at a resolution of 72 ppi. I’ve tried both sRGB and Display P3 colour profiles.

I am trying to post HDR images, with the one stop of HDR, on Instagram. I edit in Lightroom and only use Photoshop for creating borders and multiple-slide images. If anyone knows of a HDR compatible way to do this in Adobe Camera Raw or Lightroom, that could work as well.

I generally use the ‘open as smart layers’ for sending photos from Lightroom Classic to Photoshop, but I’ve tried exporting and then importing images as well. The images miss HDR capability from the start when represented as a layer in Photoshop.

I’m using a Macbook Pro Touchbar from 2018 and have the latest version of Photoshop installed - version 26.0.0. I’ve got the latest version of Camera Raw and Lightroom Classic as well.

Is there an HDR-savvy photographer out there?

Thanks

Tim

@Tim Bergholdt33038708p35l were you able to solve the HDR problem? Unfortunately, I am not a Insta fan, but, I was curious with your question. Here is a detail post from a photographer with steps for both MAC and PC. Here is another post from the same photographer, but a more recent one

Hi there

Thank you for responding!

And no, I had to give it up in the end. I did try Greg Benz's way, but in that way I can't use Photoshop. I use Photoshop for borders, two-page images and such. And that was more important to me for most images.

I spoke to a number of Photoshop support staff members. The answer from the last one I spoke to was, that Photoshop just doesn't support HDR outside of Camera Raw yet.

Thanks for reaching out, though!
