Help please 😭 Photoshop keeps crashing upon exit.

I have had this issue with all versions of Photoshop past v 26.4.1 whereby I can’t close the app without crashing, even immediately after opening. I tried all the solutions I could find and out of desperation, I reset Windows completely and was able to get it to work for five days before it happens again. For context, I am using a Legion Pro 7i, with both Intel and Nvidia drivers, all up to date. I can’t make any preferences changes on the app itself because the app would crash and therefore not save the changes made. There is no crash report window too.

I honestly lost track of all the solutions I’ve tried, even had official Adobe IT to take over my laptop twice to resolve pre-windows reset to no avail. I should be able to enjoy all the benefits of paying for a subscription, so I would really appreciate any help I could get here. Thank you 😔

Have you tried disabling the Intel GPU completely in Windows Device manager?

I know you said you tried disabling it, but you’re pretty vague about how precisely you went about that.

Dual GPUs remains pretty close to the top of the list of things that make Photoshop crash. The problem is, there’s no way for Photoshop to control which GPU is called. That’s entirely at the mercy of how the manufacturer has configured the operating system and the two GPU drivers. And with the GPU being an integrated part of Photoshop’s processing pipeline, lots of problems can happen and there’s nothing Adobe can do about it.

So, take the integrated GPU completely out of the equation. Then, for good measure, reset Photoshop preferences to clear out any corruption there. Preferences contain the full app configuration, including system-dependent and hidden parameters.

It is tricky and I’m at my wit’s end. I’ll try to list as many clues here:

I’ve got no plugins installed from Creative Cloud or any other sources.
I cannot disable Use Graphics Processor because I can’t save preferences upon exit. I have tried changing GPU preferences via Windows settings, but neither one works. Also set to dGPU on Lenovo Vantage.
Photoshop Compatibility Check is all clear, no issues detected.

Photoshop is allowed through Firewall. Also checked to Run as Administrator.
I did a clean installation with the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool, removed everything including Creative Cloud itself. Didn’t work hence I resolved to doing a clean Windows reset with all data removed. That was what allowed Photoshop to work completely fine for a few days. The crash happens consistently every time I try to close it. Documents can be created, but generative AI bar won’t load when I tried to generate something.
Yes, I am using an external monitor. It’s a BenQ GW2780, but I only use Photoshop exclusively on my laptop monitor.
Crashing still happens despite OpenCL™, OpenGL®, and Vulkan® Compatibility Pack is installed or uninstalled.
This issue has been persistent after v26.4.1. As a result, I have been running that version for the longest time until I got a crash report. A .txt file is attached if it helps. Since then, I’ve rolled back to v26.3 and that has been *knock on wood* working as usual.

Do let me know if any additional information is needed, I appreciate the time and effort it takes to review everything.

Thank you for your response! I am already using NVIDIA’s Studio Driver, updated to its latest version. I have tried all fixes listed on your Google search, apart from disabling multithreaded compositing in Photoshop preferences itself because I can’t close the app properly to save it.

This is my system info:

Hmmm… This is going to be tricky. I just know it. :-(

While we are waiting for more input, can you paste the full system info from the Help menu. There’s a lot of it and it might hold a clue or two.

So, you’ve got no plugins that might be causing issues?

Have you tested with Use Graphics Processor disabled?

It would at least tie it down a bit if that fixes it.

You mentioned it working for a few days. Does that mean it is intermittent? Or does it reliably crash every time you close it?

Are you using an external monitor? (If it sounds like I’m getting desperate, I’ll give you one guess as to why that might be!)

These trouble shooters are handy as they give you a full check list.

Looking at your first post again, I read ‘Clean installation’ and assumed that meant you had reinstalled using the Cleaner Tool. I’m thinking that I might have read too much into that, so can you confirm?

Do you have any plugins or extensions installed? If yes, try opening Photosahop while holding down the Shift key. This forces Photoshop to open without those plugins, so if it closes down OK after this, you have somewhere to start.

You have built in and dedicated GPUs. It’s good that you are forcing the Nvidia GPU, but how did you achieve this? Google’s very useful new summarizer AI mode describes two methods.

Which driver are you using for the GPU? The Studio driver is preferred.

Google give different advice depending on the precise wording of your question.

‘legion pro 7i crashes when closing Photoshop’ gave me

I just checked the spec on the Legion Pro 7i and depending on how yours configured, it’s pretty capable, so I don’t think it is a poor spec issue. All the same if you can open Photoshop and go:

Help > System Info > Copy and paste to this thread, that will give us more to work with.
