Help with 'unexpected end of file' on Photoshop document

Hello.

My cat jumped on my computer while I was saving some digital art I've been working on for a while. It now gives this error when trying to open it. I thought I had previous versions saved (I've saved the document numerous times), but there's nothing in preferences. I tried opening it in Illustrator, but it only loads an off-colour version of the background. All other layers are blank.

Even if I can get a flat image of my work, I can copy from that. I just can't start from scratch. Can anyone help me figure out how to recover even some of my work?

(Yes, I know I should have backed up my file. I was in a bit of a rush to complete the work and didn't think of it. Reminding me of what I should've done won't help, so I'd appreciate if those comments were kept to a minimum.)

To open the flattened composite (if saved), in Photoshop: File > Open, then depress the Option + Shift (Mac) or Alt + Shift (Win) keys and press open.

"Unexpected end of file" means the file is corrupt.

It may not even be the cat. File corruption is always caused by hardware failure. This can happen when you save directly to external storage or over a network connection. It can also be a drive about to fail or bad RAM. The bigger the file is, the higher the likelihood of random events hitting any one file.

I think your best hope is probably to open a flattened copy from Lightroom. You can also look for Export options from Bridge.

Adding that I figured out why my previous versions weren't saving and fixed that problem, but I still need help with my work as-is.
