It should already work that way, at least it does on my Mac, and in two different ways:

    • When using the command File > Place Embedded, select multiple images in the Place Embedded dialog box, as shown in the picture below. This also works with the Place Linked command.
    • When using drag-and-drop, just select multiple images before dragging them.

Either way, after you click Place or drop the drag, you will have to accept each of the files you selected. For example, if you placed one image, you commit one image (like pressing Enter). If you placed 12 images, you will have to press Enter 12 times.

When done, each image is on its own layer, as shown in the picture below.

Just in case this different use case helps someone else, I wrote a script to automate stacking multiple files - including multi-layer PSD/PSB files into a single layered document, retaining the source layers for each input file (the Adobe load files into stack script doesn't retain layers in source files).

So FILE-A.psd which contained 3 layers, and FILE-B.psb which contained 2 layers would result in a single layered PSD with a layer structure similar to:

    (FILE-A) Layer 1

    (FILE-A) Layer 2

    (FILE-A) Layer 3

    (FILE-B) Layer 1

    (FILE-B) Layer 2

    EDIT:

I have updated the script to v1.4 with a GUI and various options!
