Question

How can I copy a brush into another folder?

Hello, everyone!

As the title says... what I'm trying to do is copy the same brush and have it two separate folders.  So maybe I've got a brush that's great for painting hair and I've got that in a brush folder labeled "Hair".  But now that same brush would be great for painting grass.  In a perfect world, I could copy that same brush and put it in a folder labeled "Grass".

Is there a quick way to do that?  At the moment I have to select the brush, then click the upper right tab and select "New Brush Preset" then copy and paste the name of the brush, then move that new brush into the desired folder.  It's a bit clunky and I was wondering if there's a copy/paste feature somewhere that I'm missing?

Thanks in advance!

One of the easiest ways is to simply drag a preset between folders.  It will appear to be gone from the source folder, but if you delete the folder and reload it again, you will find everything as it was.

To avoid that you need to export a group of new and/or moved presest to create a new .abr file

An alternative is to use a plugin like Brushbox or Brusherator (Brushbox was the better one last I looked — I have licenses for both of them).  Brushbox is a one off US$19

Sets like the Kyle Megapack has more than 700 presets, and it can be tricky finding the one you want, so it is useful to create a favourits group and save it out to an .abr file.  I personally use a different approach, and instead use the search bar.  You do need to have some idea on what search word to use.  You can rename presets but if you want the new name to stick, you have to export the group again or it will revert the next time you load it to the main panel window.

I also like to have all of the options on.  This is especially important with huge groups like Kyle Megapack so you know that a particular preset is not going to change tool on you.

Something else that is really useful, and straight forward to do, is rename the .abr groups in the presets menu.  The file name needs to start with a meaningful name so they will appear together.  For instance, all of my Aaron Blaise brushes are together at the top of the list (best value brush presets you can find anywhere He also has useful videos showing you the best way to use them).  As you can see, I have not done this to all of them, but if I get a set with maybe one or two useful presets, I copy them to a group with better presets and delete the shite one.

Select the brush you wish to duplicate in the brushes palette. Then, without doing anything else, switch over to the Brush Settings palette. In the upper right corner of the brush settings, palette, select New Brush Preset, to create a duplicate. Leave everything the same, but rename it to something you'll recognize. Then, when you go back to the brushes pallet, you will see your new duplicate brush right under the one you duplicated. You can then drag that new brush to whatever Brush Group you wish within the brushes palette. Or put it in a new group you create.

    Hi Vincent,

From the Brushes Panel, you can select the brush you need and from the panel menu select New Brush Preset.

It will make a new brush with the same preset as long as you didn't change the preset options.

After that, you can move it to another folder.
