How can I "grab" file name but not change extension?

Hello, teammates!

I am a longtime user, so I know I am missing something simple, but I can't figure it out how to get this preference back. I just clean installed Ventura 13.6.1 (Mac) and am running Photoshop 25.1.

What I've always done (and want to do again) is be able to "save as" and grab a file name from an existing file but retain the correct extension. In the example attached, I am saving a file in the PDF format. I want to click on "shadow-lower-left.mp4" but only take the file's name, not change the .pdf to .mp4.

Also an issue on macOS Sonoma 14.1.1 with Photoshop 2024 (ps ver 25.1)

I'm using Monterey and at this point I don't know if there is a setting for what you want, so I'll describe how I select/copy and paste filenames. I'm not sure if it's what you used to do, but I hope it helps until you root out the correct answer.

Double-click anywhere on the filename. It will highlight (select) it. Since the cursor is to the left of the .pdf, it should not highlight that.

Cmd-c to copy the selected name into the clipboard.

Double-click on the filename to the left of the .mp4 and it should only select that part.

Cmd-v will replace the .mp4 filename with the desired .pdf filename.

Edit: Just got finished composing my message, and newer posts are saying it's a bug Photoshop is hitting under Ventura.

I did some quick tests:

I did verify that Photoshop 2024 (version 25) does treat the clicked file name extension differently in macOS 12 vs macOS 13, doing it right in macOS 12 and wrong in macOS 13 as you showed. That’s actually not good.

Could it be an Apple change, because Photoshop is the same version and it’s the macOS version that changed? To find out, I also looked at what Apple Preview and Adobe Illustrator do.

I was surprised to find that in macOS 13, Preview and Illustrator continue to respect the extension of the selection in the Format menu, just as Photoshop did in macOS 12. In macOS 13, only Photoshop has started to do this the wrong way. I only tried those two other applications, though, feel free to test more. I also did not test Photoshop 2023 to see if it behaves properly in macOS 13.

In case this is a Photoshop bug, you probably want to report it in the Bugs section of this community, where problem reports are tracked.

I appreciate you "Sherlocking" this, Conrad. I will report this issue in the Bugs section. I feel like this happened to me years ago, so I figured it was just a preference that I needed to reselect after a clean install.

The toughest part was properly articulating the issue. Thanks again.

I agree, articulating this issue is very tough! Took me several tries to even find this thread, ha.

I am using Photoshop 2024 on a Mac 12.7.1 Monterey and this is a non issue. So I would put it down to Ventura teething issues.
