To prevent large temporary files in Photoshop, increase your scratch disk space, especially with a faster SSD. Optimize Photoshop settings by reducing history states and cache levels. Close unnecessary programs and consider resetting Photoshop's preferences to default. Ensure you're using the latest Photoshop version and work with lower resolutions for large images. If the issue persists, consult Adobe's support for further assistance.

The large temporary files are the scratch disk files. This is by design, image editing involves moving and swapping a large amount of data, and they will be created and used no matter what free RAM you have. I have 256GB RAM installed but still keep several hundred GB free on the scratch disk.  By design the scratch files are deleted on closure although a crash can leave them behind. If they are still there after closing Photoshop then they can safely be deleted.

if Photoshop (& most other Adobe software) suffers a crash of any kind like for example 3d fails to rendor then the temp files are NOT auto wiped and yes that can be a major problem for people that allow Adobe to use their c drive... the fix is to restart your computer & this should clear any unneeded temp files

    Hi

    A few questions.

Is the temp file deleted after Photoshop closes?

How big is the temp file immediately after opening Photoshop - no documents open?
Create a new document. RGB , 16 bit , 3000 x 2000 pixels - how big is the temp file now?
Close Photoshop - the temp file should be deleted.

Now before opening one of your project files - how big is on disk? Open it in Photoshop = how big is the temp file (before you work on it)?

To add to what the others have said, you cannot get rid ofcthe temp scratch files. The are an integral part of the way Photoshop works and swaps large amounts of info between RAM and disk. So you need to create space on the disk or change the scratch disk to one with more space available.

I'll back up what Mark has said.

Look in Preferences > Performance to see what drive is currently set as your Scratch space

Open File Explorer or Finder and navigate to the root directory of that drive

Set the View to Details or whatever the Finder equivalent is

    Close Photoshop

Delete any Photoshop temp files left behind.  Look for any that do not have todays date as well, and get rid

    What are your system specs?

How much memory does your computer have, and how much is allocated to Photoshop (Preferences > Performance)?

64Gb seems a lot for just starting a project unless:

    1. the file size is very large
    2. the file is 16 or 32 bit
    3. Your computer does not have much RAM
    4. You have not allocated enough RAM to Photoshop.

The bottom line is that you absolutely need those Temp files, but they do slow things down, so:

    1. Use an SSD if possible
    2. Allocate at least 70% memory to Photoshop

If you open Photoshop and go Help > System Info > Copy  and paste the information to this thread, we'll have a better idea what is going on

You may need to adjust the settings for your scratch disk. You can find those settings in the Photoshop Preferences area.
